Web design for Sheffield.
Where the website should produce a quote.

Sheffield brings us a different brief from anywhere else on this list: engineering, fabrication and trade supply, where the product is made to order and the website’s real job is to produce a number. A quoting tool or a configurator is a harder build than a shop and a far better one, because it removes the slowest step in the sales process.

A configurator is pricing logic with a face on it

The reason most of these fail is that the pricing rules were never written down before the build started.

Get the rules out of the estimator’s head first

Material, size, finish, quantity break, tooling charge, carriage, minimum order. If those are in one person’s judgement rather than on paper, the first phase of the project is writing them down, and it is the valuable phase.

Decide what it must refuse to price

A configurator that quotes anything will quote something impossible. The combinations that go to a human have to be defined deliberately, and the handover has to be graceful rather than a dead end.

A quote is a document, not a number

Versioned, dated, with its own reference, valid for a stated period, as a PDF somebody can send to their own buyer. That artefact is what wins the job.

It has to reach the system you already run

A quote that has to be retyped into your accounts package has saved nobody anything.

What this does to a trade sales process

  • The slow step is the quote, not the enquiry Most trade suppliers lose jobs to whoever answered first. A configurator that produces a defensible number in a minute changes that more than any amount of marketing.
  • Self-serve for the small stuff The small repeat orders that occupy an estimator all morning should price themselves, leaving the complicated ones to a person.
  • Every quote becomes data What was asked for, what was quoted, what converted. Most trade businesses have never had that and it changes pricing decisions immediately.

When we are the wrong firm for this

If your pricing genuinely cannot be written down — if every job is judged by somebody with thirty years of experience looking at a drawing — then a configurator is the wrong build, and we will tell you that rather than spending your money finding out. The right build in that case is a smaller one: an enquiry process that captures the drawing properly and gets it to the estimator with everything they need.

We would rather sell you that than a configurator that nobody trusts.

Questions

Before you ask.

Can a website quote made-to-order products?

Yes, where the pricing rules can be written down: material, size, finish, quantity breaks, tooling, carriage and minimum order. Where they cannot, the honest build is a better enquiry process that gets a complete brief to your estimator.

What happens with a job the configurator cannot price?

It hands over to a person deliberately, with everything already entered. Defining those cases up front is part of the work — a tool that prices everything will eventually price something impossible.

Will the quote reach our accounts system?

It should, and we will build that connection. A quote that has to be retyped into another system has not saved anybody any time.

Ready to get started?

Tell us what you need. We will scope it, price it and build it.
