← Everywhere we work

Web design for Glasgow.
And the delivery arithmetic nobody checks.

Glasgow reaches us mostly through trade: businesses selling into Scotland, or Scottish businesses selling south. Both discover the same thing after launch, and it is never in the brief — the delivery rules that work for England do not work here, and the system has to know that rather than the customer finding out.

Delivery rules that have to be in the system

Every one of these has caught out a shop we have looked at, and all four are configuration rather than code.

Next-day is not next-day everywhere

Highlands, islands and some postcode areas are a longer service or a surcharge, and a flat "next day" promise on the checkout is a promise the courier has not made. The system has to quote by postcode, not by country.

A surcharge is better than a refusal

Shops commonly exclude whole postcode areas because the surcharge is awkward to implement. The customer is usually willing to pay it; they are not willing to be told no.

Chilled and frozen change the whole map

If the parcel has to arrive within a time, the area it can serve is smaller than the area the courier covers, and the shop must stop selling outside it rather than apologising afterwards.

The cut-off has to move

A later-dispatch region needs an earlier cut-off. One national cut-off time guarantees a late delivery every week.

Selling into Scotland as a trade supplier

  • Rounds, not couriers If you run your own delivery, the day is a round. The system should enforce which day a customer can order for rather than letting them pick.
  • A minimum that reflects the distance The minimum order and the free-delivery threshold almost always need to differ by region, and the owner should be able to change both without ringing us.
  • Statements per account, monthly The thing that gets wholesale customers at a distance to pay, and the thing most bespoke portals ship without.

When we are the wrong firm for this

If you want a firm that can be in your Glasgow office, hire in Glasgow — there are good studios and we are four and a half hours away by road. We will not take an on-site support commitment there. We are worth considering when the build is a trading system and the hard part is the rules rather than the room.

Ask us about the delivery arithmetic on the first call. If we do not raise postcodes unprompted, we have not thought about your business.

Questions

Before you ask.

Can the shop charge different delivery for the Highlands and islands?

Yes, and it should. Quoting by postcode rather than by country, with a surcharge where the courier charges one, loses far fewer orders than excluding whole areas — which is what most shops quietly do.

Do you travel to Glasgow?

For a launch, if the build warrants it and the quote says so. We will not promise ongoing on-site support at that distance, because we could not keep the promise.

Can delivery cut-off times vary by region?

They need to. One national cut-off with a region that dispatches later produces a late delivery every single week, and the customer blames you rather than the courier.

Ready to get started?

Tell us what you need. We will scope it, price it and build it.
