Z report
A Z report is the end-of-day report that totals a session and closes it, so the next sale belongs to tomorrow. It breaks the day down by payment method, product group and staff member. An X report shows the same figures without resetting anything, which is what you take mid-shift to check the drawer at a handover.
In practice
A Z report is taken at close. It totals the day by payment method, by product group and by staff member, and it ends the session, so the next sale belongs to tomorrow. An X report is the same information taken mid-shift without resetting anything, which is what you use to check the drawer at a handover.
The number worth looking at is not the total but the variance: what the system says should be in the drawer against what is in it. A consistent small shortfall is a process problem, a sudden large one is a conversation.
If a shop runs an EPOS and a separate online ordering system, it has two end-of-day reports that will never quite agree, and somebody spends twenty minutes a night deciding which to believe. One system removes that job.
Also called: end of day report, X report, cashing up.
